SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. — A Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s sergeant has died from complications of a heart attack, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Sgt. Alton Dale Berrian helped a motorist move a disabled vehicle out of the roadway on May 8, according to the page. He complained of pain immediately after the incident and went to the emergency room later that day.

Berrian lost consciousness during the examination. He was flown to another hospital for emergency surgery. He never regained consciousness and died on May 16.

Berrian had served with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years and had served in law enforcement for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, four children and 10 grandchildren.
