Early Tuesday morning turned into a very bad decision tree for two would-be car thieves in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

According to ABC 6 Philadelphia, police in Catasauqua say a homeowner fired shots at two suspects who were attempting to steal a vehicle along the 200 block of Second Street around 1 a.m. One of the suspects was reportedly wounded during the encounter, though both men managed to flee the scene.

Police say the homeowner interrupted the suspects in the middle of the attempted theft. Authorities report that both suspects were wearing black masks, a detail that rarely signals good intentions at 1 a.m. One of the men was allegedly armed with a knife, while the other was carrying a metal bar.

That’s the point where this stops being “petty property crime” and starts looking a lot more serious.

After being confronted, the suspects ran off on foot. Despite being wounded, the injured suspect also fled, and police are actively searching for both individuals. No information has been released on the extent of the injury or whether the wounded suspect later sought medical treatment.

Police have not indicated whether the homeowner will face any charges, and at this stage, the incident appears to be under investigation. As with most cases involving defensive gunfire, authorities will review the totality of the circumstances, including whether the homeowner reasonably feared for their safety when confronted by armed suspects on their property.

What’s clear is that this wasn’t a simple smash-and-grab. Two masked individuals, one with a knife and the other with a blunt weapon, attempting to steal a vehicle in the early morning hours presents a scenario most homeowners would find threatening. It’s also a reminder that vehicle thefts aren’t always non-violent crimes—and that criminals often come prepared for confrontation.

No further suspect descriptions have been released, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

For the suspects involved, what started as a plan to steal a car ended with gunfire, injuries, and a manhunt. In other words, a really bad night—and one more example of why choosing to prowl neighborhoods armed with weapons tends to end poorly.

Police say updates will be released as the investigation continues.
