ATLANTA — A Spalding County deputy died following a vehicle crash that may have been caused by a medical emergency, Atlanta News First reported.

Deputy Joe Crumpton, 62, was transported to Fayette Piedmont Hospital on Dec. 9 in cardiac arrest after the crash. He died despite more than an hour of life-saving efforts, according to the report.

The crash occurred around 5 p.m. and was discovered by a Fayette County Emergency Services employee who found Crumpton unconscious in his vehicle. Witnesses told authorities they believed the deputy suffered a medical episode before striking another vehicle and veering off the road, according to the report. No other injuries were reported.

Crumpton had served with the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office since May 2023 as a transport officer in the detention division. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.

Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix confirmed that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab will determine the official cause of death.
