Dallas Police Department officers can now wear cowboy hats as part of their department uniform, a simple change with a big morale impact.

In this episode of The Brief: Wellness Edition, Emily Hitchings and Greg Friese explore how cowboy hats, facial hair and tattoos help humanize officers and give them another way to take pride in their work. Hitchings, a former police officer, explains that leadership doesn’t always need to be a major policy or department change. A small change, like cowboy hats, likely came from listening to officers about what they wanted and implementing a change to boost morale.

“It’s Texas! (Officers) should be wearing cowboy hats.”
