Shooting is usually considered fun by most gun owners. Some like it more than others, but most enjoy it on some level. Training is not fun. At least, not for most people. Shooting involves making the gun go bang, sometimes in a challenging drill, sometimes at a tin can. Training involves identifying your weaknesses and systematically working on them. Not once a month, but as frequently as possible. That doesn’t mean “as your schedule allows.” It means making time in your schedule so that you get the time and reps needed.
A good minimum is to dry fire 5 days a week, and live fire once. If you can do more, great, but the 5/1 schedule will allow for good consistent improvement. Sometimes this is easier said than done, I find myself struggling right now to keep this schedule up. Not because I don’t have enough time, but because I’m not making the time. Does that sound familiar to any of you?
Sometimes life gets in the way of training. Sometimes we just want to do other things, like ride motorcycles. In either event, Discipline is more important than Motivation. Anyone can be productive when they are motivated. Only the very successful can be productive when they are not motivated. So put your phone or computer down and go dry fire! Watching another movie is not going to make your life better, and I am as guilty of this as anyone. Time to go train.
