The Texas license to carry a handgun is required to carry without the extra restrictions and penalties. Texas law gives protections and benefits to those who carry a handgun in Texas with a license to carry. A restricted form of constitutional carry allows people in Texas to carry without a license but it has its own set of laws that do not apply to license holders.

License to Carry a Handgun

Getting a license to carry a handgun is easy. The required class can be taken online at your own pace from anywhere at anytime. The online Texas license to carry class (LTC) is certified statewide by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The is the easiest and most popular way to get certified for your license to carry a handgun.

Open and Concealed Carry

The Texas license to carry a handgun allows for both open and concealed carry. Regardless of how you carry, the handgun must be “in a holster” under Texas law. You can carry it on your waistband, in a shoulder holster or any other way you want to carry it as long as the handgun is in a holster.

Handgun License Application

Submitting your application for the Texas license to carry is done online on the DPS website. The application can be submitted before or after you take the class, the class will cover the process in detail. Once you apply, the DPS will send you information on how to schedule your fingerprint appointment. You will also have to upload your certificate of training (LTC101) and any other required documents on the DPS website.
