The Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous 2025, held in the scenic expanses of Wyoming’s Brush Creek Ranch in April, brought together top firearms manufacturers and media for a hands-on experience of cutting-edge products. This invitation-only event showcased impressive ranges for real-world testing, featuring brands like Kimber, which displayed their latest offerings. As a media participant, I had the privilege of experiencing the Kimber CDS9 Classic firsthand before its release.

The Kimber CDS9 Classic

Kimber introduced the CDS9 Classic in mid-2025 as a streamlined version of the original CDS9. This gun targets budget-conscious shooters without sacrificing core capabilities. Priced at around $795.00, it’s more affordable than premium siblings, thanks to thoughtful simplifications like nylon grips instead of G10.

The Kimber CDS9 Classic.

At its heart, the CDS9 Classic is a hammer-fired, single-action-only (SAO) design. It echoes the timeless 1911 platform but is scaled down for concealment. The stainless-steel slide, finished in durable KimPro II, measures just 6.2 inches overall, with aggressive front and rear serrations for secure manipulation. It features an RMSc direct-mount optic cut for seamless red dot integration, enhancing target acquisition in low-light conditions.

So, what differentiates the Kimber CDS9 Classic from the CDS9? The CDS9 Classic is a new, updated, and more affordable version of the original CDS9. It is designed with a focus on minimalism and a lower price point.

Key differences include the Classic’s simpler slide serrations, smooth front strap, and polymer grips. However, the original CDS9 features fish-scale slide serrations, aluminum “grenade pattern” grips, and front strap checkering. The Classic model also has polished flats on the slide and lacks an accessory rail. This results in a more minimalist aesthetic and lighter weight.

Finally, the CDS9 Classic features a slimmer, more budget-friendly profile with ambidextrous safety and night sights.

The Classic in Hand

The frame is made of lightweight aluminum, also in KimPro II, weighing 21.44 ounces unloaded. It is ideal for all-day carry without fatigue. Dimensions are compact: 5 inches tall with the 13-round magazine, 1.1 inches wide, and a 3.18-inch match-grade stainless steel barrel.

The double-stack configuration delivers impressive capacity. Correspondingly, it ships with one 13-round and one 15-round magazine, allowing 15+1 rounds.

Ambidextrous controls, including the thumb safety, slide stop, and reversible magazine release, make the firearm user-friendly for both left- and right-handed shooters. The accessory rail accommodates compact lights while front strap checkering ensures a firm grip.

The sights feature TruGlo Tritium Pro Night Sight with Orange front ring for the front sight and TruGlo Tritium Pro Night Sights with White rear rings for the rear. This allows quick sight alignment paired with the optic-ready setup.

Shooting the CDS9 Classic

The flat-faced trigger with a vertical brake point breaks crisply at about 3.5-4 pounds. This minimizes overtravel for precise shots. A dual recoil spring system reduces muzzle flip, while an external extractor enhances reliability across various ammunition types.

Shooting the CDS9 Classic at the Rendezvous seemed to blend nostalgia with modern performance. The event’s ranges included steel targets from 5 to 25 yards. Although I was unable to spend a whole day at the range with this gun alone, I was afforded quite a bit of trigger time. While small, the CDS9 Classic is a powerhouse.

The SAO trigger stood out to me first because it offered rapid and accurate follow-up shots. Recoil was mild for a micro-compact, with the dual springs effectively absorbing the 9mm’s energy without causing wrist strain, even during extended shooting periods.

My main concentration was shooting within home and self-defense distances of 5 to 7 yards. I found the gun to perform exceptionally well. Even when I pushed the distance further, the CDS9 was impressive. Hitting steel at 25 yards is no small feat for such a short barrel.

The ambi controls facilitated smooth reloads with the 15-round mag, and the trigger felt crisp and predictable. The nylon grips, while less aggressive than G10, provided adequate texture without hotspots during prolonged use.

Ultimate Concealed Carry SAO?

What elevates the CDS9 Classic as “the ultimate carry single-action”? In a sea of striker-fired options, its SAO mechanism offers unmatched trigger quality. It has a lighter pull, shorter reset, and inherent safety via the cocked-and-locked condition. This setup prevents negligent discharges while enabling a fast, precise first shot—critical for self-defense.

The compact footprint (under 7 inches long) allows for easy concealment in IWB holsters. However, the 15+1 capacity rivals that of larger guns, providing ample firepower without bulk. Optics and light readiness modernize it for real-world threats.

The all-metal construction ensures durability over polymer frames, resisting wear in daily carry. Ambi features accommodate a diverse range of users, and its affordable price makes premium performance accessible.

Minor quibbles? The grips might slip in sweaty conditions for some. However, aftermarket options are readily available to address this issue.

The CDS9 Classic Elevates Concealed Carry

The Kimber CDS9 Classic left the Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous 2025 as a favorite. It proved that single-action carry guns can be compact, reliable, and refined. For those seeking a blend of heritage and innovation, it’s an outstanding choice. The CDS9 Classic elevates concealed carry without compromising on the end user’s needs.
