Some guns lean hard into tradition. Others go full modern. The new Chiappa Black Thunder revolver tries to live right in the middle and it’s a pretty interesting place to be.

Chiappa Firearms took the iconic Colt 1873 Single Action Army blueprint and pushed it in a direction most purists probably didn’t see coming.
You still get:
- Single-action operation
- Loading gate
- Manual ejector rod
- 6-shot cylinder
All the stuff that makes a classic wheelgun what it is. But then they layered on:
- Full-length barrel shroud
- Picatinny rail up top
- Fiber optic front sight
- Adjustable rear sight
- Rubber Hogue grip
It’s not subtle.
The Chiappa Black Thunder revolver is chambered in .44 Magnum, which immediately puts it into a different category than your average range revolver.
This is:
- hunting capable
- silhouette-ready
- and definitely not just for casual plinking
You’ve got two configurations:
- 5.5-inch “short” model
- 8-inch “long” model
So whether you want something a bit more maneuverable or something that leans into stability and velocity, there’s an option.

Let’s be honest, the rail is what makes people stop and look twice. A Picatinny rail on a single-action revolver is not something you see every day.
Mount a micro red dot on top, and suddenly this Old West-inspired gun starts looking a lot more like a modern hunting rig. And paired with that fiber optic front sight and adjustable rear, it’s clear this wasn’t just thrown together for looks.
It’s meant to be shot.
Chiappa ditched traditional wood grips in favor of a black rubber Hogue grip, similar to what you’d find on a Ruger Super Blackhawk.
That’s a smart move. Because when you’re dealing with .44 Magnum recoil, comfort and control matter a lot more than aesthetics.
The Chiappa Black Thunder revolver isn’t trying to compete with your everyday carry gun.
It lands in a different lane:
It’s also going to appeal to shooters who like the idea of a revolver but want something that plays nicer with modern optics and accessories.
MSRP comes in at:
- $1,155 (5.5” model)
- $1,135 (8” model)
Which puts it right in line with other premium big-bore revolvers. Just with a very different personality.
The Chiappa Black Thunder revolver isn’t trying to blend in with traditional wheelguns. It takes a platform everyone recognizes… and gives it a completely different vibe. Part cowboy. Part modern hunting rig.
And depending on your taste, that’s either exactly what you’ve been waiting for or something you didn’t know you wanted until now. Learn more HERE.
