Officers with the department’s 5th District attempted to de-escalate the situation and communicate with the man upon arrival. Police say that when officers entered the home, the man went into the kitchen and held the child at knifepoint.

Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the man refused. A sergeant then deployed a TASER, which caused the man to release the knife. Officers safely removed the child and took the suspect into custody without injury to the child or any officers.

The suspect is charged with first- and second-degree assault, second-degree child abuse, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. He is being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
