Deputies with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance call in the Town of Mina on June 18 where they encountered a 66-year-old man standing outside a residence near an open garage. The man was armed with a long gun, video released on July 25 shows.

In the video, the man is seen firing a shot into the air. A deputy radioed that the man was pointing the firearm at him, prompting both deputies to take cover behind trees.

One deputy issued 22 commands to drop the weapon. The man did not comply. A woman on the front porch of the home, which was connected to the garage, is heard saying, “He will come after me.” A deputy directed her to move behind cover with them.

Moments later, an exchange of gunfire erupted and lasted approximately 30 seconds. One deputy was struck in the hand during the exchange. Both deputies returned fire, ultimately striking the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
