The sheriff’s office said the man had been reported as acting erratically in the street and was off his prescribed medication.
His mother told deputies he had a history of manic episodes and had outstanding warrants related to failing to comply with court-ordered treatment conditions.
Body camera video from the June 7 incident shows deputies arriving at the residence, where his father allowed them inside and warned them his son had a knife. Deputies called for the man to exit a room and speak with them. When he emerged, he was holding an object.
Video shows deputies giving a verbal command to drop the item. The man then charged at them with a knife and swung it at one of the deputies, prompting them to fire shots.
The deputy who fired his weapon sustained a minor head injury after falling into a bathtub but was not seriously hurt.
