ICE Shooting in Minneapolis — Justified?

A woman fatally shot during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in Minneapolis has been identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, according to the Star Tribune.

Reporting from the scene, NBC News correspondent Maggie Vespa said multiple U.S. officials and lawmakers confirmed Good was a U.S. citizen. And she was not the target of the ICE operation underway at the time of the shooting.

Local officials emphasized that point as protests quickly formed near the intersection where the incident occurred.

According to the Trump administration, the ICE officer involved fired in self-defense after Good drove her vehicle toward him. They called it an act of “domestic terrorism.”

Vespa reported that demonstrators at the scene consistently rejected the administration’s characterization.

Witnesses told the station they did not see an attempt to strike an officer. Instead, they said the footage appears to show Good attempting to steer away and flee as multiple officers surrounded her vehicle.

Good’s mother told the Star Tribune that the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death were “so stupid.” She added that she believed her daughter was likely terrified in the moments leading up to the shooting.

As protests grew throughout the day, demonstrators repeatedly chanted Good’s name. They shared and discussed the video footage among themselves.

Anger toward ICE was widespread at the scene, with many calling for accountability as the Department of Homeland Security continues what officials have described as a historic ICE operation.

At this stage, investigations are ongoing, and no final determination has been made regarding the legality of the shooting. Obviously, there’s a lot to unpack.
