Eddie Pernell Jones pleaded guilty to resisting law enforcement causing death and other charges in the 2023 death of Trooper Aaron Smith as he was deploying spike strips

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. — A murder charge has been dropped against a man who pleaded guilty for his involvement in the death of Indiana State Police Trooper Aaron Smith, WRTV reported.

Eddie Pernell Jones pleaded guilty to resisting law enforcement causing death, attempted aggravated battery and attempted battery with a deadly weapon, according to the report. In the 2023 incident, he was fleeing in a vehicle when he struck and killed Smith, who was deploying spike strips.

Jones has not yet been sentenced, nor has the court issued sentencing guidelines regarding how many years he faces.

Another suspect, who was in the suspect vehicle during the pursuit, received a sentence of over two years in prison, according to the report.
