A Pierce County homeowner shot and killed an alleged intruder early Sunday morning, according to deputies.
The shooting unfolded near 160th Street by Spanaway Lake High School around 1:45 a.m., per FOX 13 Seattle.
Deputies said the homeowner first called 911 to report a man trying to break into his house. Minutes later, the homeowner called again—this time to report he had fired his gun.
When deputies arrived, they found the suspected intruder with a gunshot wound. Medics attempted lifesaving measures, but the man died at the scene.
A firearm was later found on the suspect.
Officials are treating the case as self-defense.
“This is tragic. Nobody wants to ever experience this or have to protect their family in this manner,” a Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesperson told the station.
Deputies confirmed the homeowner is fully cooperating with investigators.
Neighbors told reporters the intruder tried to force his way through the back door before being shot.
Deputies taped off the property and conducted interviews throughout the night, stressing the homeowner’s right to defend himself inside his residence.
While tragic, investigators say this incident highlights the risks of breaking into an occupied home.
Pierce County authorities continue to review the case, but all indications point to the homeowner lawfully protecting his property and family.
