Gun control isn’t just misguided – it’s racist. That’s the argument Maj Toure, founder of Black Guns Matter, laid out in a powerful sit-down with John Stossel.

“Gun control was literally started to stop black people from having the means to defend themselves,” Toure said. From colonial-era bans on black gun ownership to modern carry licensing disparities in places like California, Toure believes the roots – and current impacts – of gun control remain discriminatory.

Black Guns Matter, his grassroots education movement, hosts free firearm safety and conflict resolution classes across America’s hardest-hit neighborhoods. Toure said the mission is simple: empower communities with knowledge and the ability to defend themselves.

“We’re going to make this demographic be the new largest gun-buying demographic in America,” he told Stossel. And it’s working. According to NSSF data cited in the interview, gun purchases among black Americans have skyrocketed in recent years.

Toure rejects claims that more guns mean more crime. Citing data and John Lott’s More Guns, Less Crime, he argued that responsibly armed citizens deter violence.

“Rapey McNapey ain’t doing it to black communities that’s armed,” he said bluntly. He compared widespread firearm ownership to having a cell phone – something every American should carry for protection, especially vulnerable women on college campuses.

He also slammed licensing requirements as unconstitutional infringements.

“Licenses are the government selling you your rights back,” he said. Still, his classes teach people how to navigate licensing systems if needed.

Toure criticized both government overreach and misleading media narratives about gun violence, mental health, and defensive gun use. He also called out laws that disproportionately criminalize black gun owners and defended civilian ownership of everything from machine guns to so-called “ghost guns,” saying the state shouldn’t have weaponry citizens can’t access.

“I’m an American. You’re not telling me what human rights I don’t have,” he declared.

Toure, a self-described libertarian and high school dropout, concluded with a challenge to viewers: rethink everything you’ve been taught about firearms, freedom, and who benefits when citizens are disarmed.
