MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. — Emergency workers rescued two girls who fell through the ice on Woolman Lake in Mount Holly on Wednesday, officials said.
A boy was able to get out of the chilly water on his own before rescuers arrived, Mount Holly police said in a statement.
Rescuers guided the girls closer to shore and then extended a rope to pull the pair from the lake. The water is shallow enough that the girls were able to stand, Chief Cliff Spencer said.
The three middle school students had been walking on the frozen surface of the lake when the ice cracked.
All were taken to an area hospital to be checked after being exposed to the frigid water.
Westampton firefighters went into the lake to retrieve personal items the three had left behind.
Mount Holly police, who couldn’t immediately be reached for additional information, cautioned people to stay off frozen lakes.
“No ice in our area should ever be considered safe, regardless of recent cold temperatures or appearances,” the department said. “Ice thickness can vary significantly and unpredictably, even within the same body of water.”
“We strongly encourage parents and guardians to speak with their children about the dangers of frozen lakes, ponds, and waterways.”
