The Leatherman Marketplace is a recommerce marketplace. Fans of the Leatherman brand are able to buy and sell used Leatherman products safely and without much risk. This platform makes Leatherman the first major brand in the knife or multi-tool niche to join what’s called the circular economy movement.
“For over 40 years, we’ve built tools meant to last and to be passed on,” said Kevin Gleason, Vice-President of Marketing at Leatherman. “The Leatherman Exchange brings this philosophy to life, giving every tool a longer life and a new story, while reducing waste and opening the door to quality craftsmanship for more people.”

Sellers must follow some simple guidelines to ensure there are no surprises on the buyer’s end. Only genuine Leatherman products are allowed to be sold on the site. A pre-sale checklist is provided. It instructs sellers to fully inspect the tool to check for functionality as well as cosmetic issues. While small scratches and such are acceptable, the tool must have full functionality with each of its features.

Sellers must also provide original photos of the tool they’re selling. This allows buyers to see the actual item being purchased.

Each listing is reviewed behind the scenes before it hits the site. The listing is checked for accuracy as well as compliance with the guidelines regarding quality control and such. This takes up to 24 hours.

Buyers browse the listings, which will obviously change regularly as products are bought and new ones are listed. Purchases are paid for with any major credit card. The final purchase price includes shipping, which is added during the checkout process.

When a product is purchased, the seller is notified by email and provided with a prepaid postage label. Print the label, package the product, and drop it in the mail. They recommend sellers ship within 72 hours but they’re given up to seven days to do so. If the product doesn’t ship within seven days, the transaction is canceled and a full refund is issued.
If you buy a product and, upon receipt, you find that it isn’t in the condition it was listed as being, you have 72 hours to file a Misrepresentation Claim to get a full refund. However, this only covers the condition of the product. If you simply decide you don’t like the tool, that’s on you. Of course, you could always turn around and list it on the Leatherman Exchange to recoup the funds.
You can read more about their return/refund policy here on their site.

When the item is delivered and the buyer has verified receipt, the seller will receive an email asking how they’d like to get paid. If the buyer doesn’t verify receipt, it happens automatically 72 hours after delivery confirmation.
Here’s where it gets pretty cool. As a seller, you have two choices when it comes to receiving your funds – cash or store credit.

If you choose cash payout, Treet (the company managing the platform) keeps 20% to cover their overhead and whatnot. Sell a $100 tool and you’ll get $80 deposited into your bank account within seven business days.
On the other hand, if you choose store credit, you’ll get 100% of the funds applied to your account. To be clear, this is credit for Leatherman.com, not the Leatherman Exchange.
The Leatherman Exchange is a great peer-to-peer marketplace concept that allows people to rehome their well-loved multi-tools.
