Shutdown Fallout: What It Means for You!

At 12:01 a.m. this morning, the federal government officially shut down after Congress failed to pass a continuing resolution to keep agencies funded.

For gun owners and the firearms industry, that means serious disruptions across the ATF, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), and the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC).

The good news? NICS checks are expected to stay online.

The bad news? Most of ATF’s industry-facing operations are about to grind to a halt.

According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), most ATF services that affect everyday business won’t be staffed during the shutdown. That includes:

• NFA Division (no commercial processing of suppressor, SBR, or SBS forms)
• Imports Branch
• Firearms and Ammunition Technology Division (FATD)
• Federal Firearms Licensing Center (FFLC)

Forms and applications can still be submitted, but don’t expect them to move forward until funding is restored. Services tied to law enforcement, military, and national security will continue, since OMB deems those “essential.”

If your Federal Firearms License expires during the shutdown, NSSF recommends contacting your local ATF office to confirm your license status.

Meanwhile, BIS and DDTC export licensing will also be suspended. In short: if it touches commercial activity, it’s going dark.

The American Suppressor Association (ASA) is sounding the alarm for buyers stuck in ATF’s already glacial NFA process.

While the eForms system will remain online, pending applications won’t move. New submissions will be accepted, tax stamps can be paid, and certifications filed, but approvals are frozen until ATF staff return.

ASA’s blunt response highlights the bigger issue: your constitutional rights should not be subject to the whims of Washington gridlock.

“This stands as a stark reminder of why ASA is determined to remove suppressors from the NFA once and for all,” the group wrote in a press release obtained by GunsAmerica.

The shutdown may last days, or weeks. If it drags on, ATF could eventually get clearance to resume some commercial processing, but there’s no timeline and no guarantee.

That leaves dealers, manufacturers, and customers hanging — and it shows how fragile access to basic 2A rights becomes when unelected bureaucrats can hit “pause” on the process.

Gun owners and industry groups alike are united on one point: this mess underscores why suppressors, SBRs, and other NFA items should never have been under ATF’s discretionary control to begin with.

For now, expect delays in NFA approvals, licensing renewals, and imports. NICS is still online, which means standard firearms transfers can continue.

But the shutdown has once again reminded the firearms community that “non-essential” in D.C. too often means your rights are the first to go.
