In this guide we will cover the steps to get a Texas License to carry (LTC). The Texas LTC is issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Anyone 18 or older who qualify can apply and receive a LTC in Texas.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before you start the process of getting a Texas LTC, you want to make sure you meet the eligibility requirements. Below are the basic requirements.

  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • Not have a felony conviction.
  • Not have a Class A or B misdemeanor conviction in the last 5 years.
  • Not have a domestic violence conviction.
  • Not be a fugitive from justice.
  • Not be chemically dependent.

Step 2: Complete the LTC Course

The Texas license to carry course consists of two parts, the classroom portion and the shooting (proficiency) portion.

Classroom Portion

The classroom portion is completed online. You can complete the online classroom portion with Texas Carry Academy. Their course is approved statewide by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Shooting Portion

Once you complete the online course, you will need to take the shooting portion with a certified LTC instructor. You can find an instructor in your area by using our LTC instructor locator.

Step 3: Submit Your LTC Application

The LTC application is submitted online on the Texas DPS website. Once you submit your online application you will receive an email with instructions o how to schedule your fingerprints and upload your documents to DPS.

Step 4: Get Your Fingerprints Taken

IdentoGO is the company the state has contracted with to provide fingerprinting services for all LTC applicants. You must schedule an appoint with IdentoGO following the instructions in the DPS email.

When scheduling your fingerprint appointment you must provide IdentoGO with service code: 119Q91. IdentoGO will submit your digital fingerprints to DPS for you.

Step 5: Upload Your Documents

You will need to scan and upload your LTC-104 (certificate of training) and any other required documents to DPS. The uploads take place on the DPS website.

Step 6: Wait For Approval

Once the DPS receives your application and required documents, they have 60 days to issue or deny your LTC. If approved, you will receive your LTC in the mail. If 60 days have passed and you have not received a letter from the DPS, you can call the handgun licensing division at 1-512-424-7293.
