There is no end in sight for the 9mm cartridge.
Here are the reasons that the 9mm cartridge will be around for decades to come.

In the world of firearm cartridges there are always new creations waiting to dethrone the legends. Case in point, Georg Luger’s creation back in 1901, the 9X19 Parabellum cartridge. Better known now as the 9mm Luger cartridge, this cartridge invented for the famous Luger pistol has become a huge player in military small arms cartridges. This in turn, created a replacement cartridge for many of the revolver cartridges used by law enforcement that became deemed obsolete. Now, a semi-automatic pistol, many times the Glock 17 handgun, could equip officers with 17 shots without reloading as opposed to the normal 6 from a revolver. It was indeed a game changer.

Normal military ammunition is the full metal jacket projectile. The Geneva Convention requires it but the projectiles sometimes go clean through an adversary and not depositing all of it’s energy in the targeted enemy soldier. It was meant to be more humane. Hollow point ammunition was required by law enforcement to truly stop drugged out felons and such dangers as the FMJ ammunition might also go through a subject and hit innocent citizens. The problem is hollow point ammunition in the early days did not always reliably expand so stopping power was not always there. The hunt for a better stopping cartridge caused a bit of worry to the classic 9mm.

Then new cartridges like the 10mm boosted power and you guessed it, recoil. The .40 Smith & Wesson cartridge was a shorter 10mm cartridge with less power, meaning less recoil. Other cartridges came and went along the way. The historic 9mm cartridge hung on through all of it and got a boost with modern performance hollow point ammunition that actually expands in your intended adversary. While the others languished, the old school 9mm Luger cartridge once again flourished to what it is in this modern day.

The addition of carbines that are chambered in 9X19mm and that also share magazines with common handguns, like the ever popular Glock models, the 9mm rocketed to another leap in popularity. The above target was shot with a Henry Homesteader from a benchrest at 100 yards away.

With 9mm target ammo prices generally lower that the competing cartridges it still retains the spot of a happy plinker on a budget.

The 9X19mm cartridge remains a great pick more than ever for the target shooter and handgun carrier. It can be chambered in smaller sized handguns that fit in a pocket or full sized rifles. With light recoil shooters can really work on accuracy. Choose from bargain priced target ammo or high performance hollow points for personal defense. This is why the 9X19mm Luger cartridge is here to stay another century.
