Sometimes less is more.
This is where the .410 shotgun really shines.

The .410 bore really seems to have two schools of thought from fellow shooters. They either love it or hate it. When used within its useful range it can be a handy little shotgun for pest control and small game. If pushed past it’s useful range it becomes a problem.
Chambered in 2.5″ lengths or the even more useful 3″ Magnum lengths the skinny shotshell can be loaded with small shot, buckshot or even shotgun slugs. They are all pricey compared to their larger gauge brothers like the 12 and 20 gauges.
The bore size is where the .410 shotgun came up with it’s name unlike the other popular shotgun chamberings that use the gauge scale for reference.

When many shooters think of .410 bore firearms the think of the cheap single shot shotguns that are generally marketed for the youth and small statured. That is certainly just the tip of the iceberg. For example how about a lever action .410 bore shotgun that looks just like a rifle? Henry Arms has one that really took the shooting world by storm when it was originally released.
How about testing out shotgun slugs to see how they really would do in a shotgun that has more than the ordinary single bead sight like most do? Winchester Super-X shotgun slugs in the were shot back on a past review to see what this rifle sighted .410 shotgun is capable of.

At 30 yards the Henry .410 Lever Action Shotgun certainly grouped well enough for close range deer or pests. I personally would never push distance with that slug shell. The old saying “It shoots straight like a rifle” is not a good plan and might give you a bad outcome.

From pests to small game the .410 bore certainly has a place on the homestead or your gun cabinet. It is great for those troublesome critters around your out buildings and in a jiffy can bring home a plump rabbit without peppering it too badly with a heavy ounce load like the bigger shotgun chamberings would.
