LYNCHBURG, Va. — A new study at Liberty University is seeking participants for a confidential survey on retaliation against police officers who come forward as whistleblowers.

The research, led by a former law enforcement officer, aims to explore how retaliation affects officers’ willingness to report misconduct within their departments.

The study will examine key questions through a confidential survey, focusing on:

• How does police whistleblower retaliation affect reporting?
• Do officers suffer retaliation for whistleblowing?
• How much does retaliation deter reporting?
• What is the rate of retaliation against whistleblowers in law enforcement?

The researcher, drawing from firsthand experience in law enforcement, aims to address the problem of retaliation while ensuring that personal biases are minimized. The anonymous survey uses closed-ended questions to help create a reliable picture of the issue.

Data from this study will identify common causes of retaliation, measure its prevalence and establish a foundation for combating the issue. The results will be compiled into a dissertation manuscript to contribute to the broader understanding and prevention of whistleblower retaliation in law enforcement.
