St. Michael is known as God’s archangel (chief angel) in the Christian Bible. A key character in the Book of Revelation, St. Michael is referred to as the “chief prince” of the heavens, leading a collection of angles to victory in a battle against Satan and his demons. Due to this role in the Bible as an angel who fought against evil, St. Michael has become known as the patron saint of police officers, interconnecting the formidable defenders of justice and keeping citizens safe from harm.
The Prayer to St. Michael has been a staple of the Catholic Church since Pope Leo XIII composed and installed it in 1886: “St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.”
