Taurus, known for its budget-friendly handguns, has made moves into the bolt-action rifle market with the release of the Taurus Expedition.

Debuted at SHOT Show 2024, with new calibers in the works, this rifle brings a combination of features and compatibility while leveraging the popular Remington 700 footprint. Let’s break it down.

What are your thoughts on the Taurus Expedition?

The Taurus Expedition is built on a short-action platform based on the Remington 700. This means it’s compatible with a wide range of aftermarket parts, such as stocks, triggers, and scope bases.

It’s chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 Winchester, with other calibers currently in development.

The Expedition combines modern features with practical design. The action itself has a fluted, skeletonized bolt handle and dual ejectors in the bolt for enhanced reliability. Also, an AR-style extractor ensures positive case ejection.

Taurus forges the action and barrel from cold hammer-forged stainless steel and coats them with a black DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) finish to enhance durability and corrosion resistance.

Taurus threads the barrel (5/8×24) for suppressor compatibility and offers an 18-inch barrel on the .308 model and a 20-inch barrel on the 6.5 Creedmoor.

The stock includes flats on the sides for tripod clamps, multiple M-LOK slots for attachments, and dual sling swivel studs. The rifle also uses AICS-style detachable magazines, available in five- or ten-round capacities.

Taurus promises 1 MOA accuracy, and the rifle’s trigger helps meet that goal. Additionally, the stock prioritizes practicality, incorporating a vertical pistol grip, an elevated cheekpiece, and a rubber butt pad.

Lastly, the barrel features a unique contoured design with a spiral fluting pattern that gives it a modern twist.

Spiral flutes help add some visual appeal while also potentially increasing rigidity Taurus Expedition.

With an MSRP of $985, the Taurus Expedition positions itself as a competitive entry into the precision rifle market. It’s already available in stores and offers an intriguing option for shooters looking for a budget-friendly bolt-action rifle that doesn’t skimp on features.
