Washington Gun Law President William Kirk shared exciting news for 2A advocates in his latest video update.
From a chilly spot in Central Washington, Kirk announced that Senator John Thune (R) from South Dakota has been elected as the new Senate Majority Leader, a development he described as a “huge, huge win for the Second Amendment.”
Kirk outlined the competition for the position, which included Senator John Cornyn from Texas and Senator Rick Scott from Florida.
According to Kirk, both Cornyn and Scott faced skepticism from Second Amendment supporters.
“Senator John Cornyn out of Texas, a person that many people in the Second Amendment Community were very skeptical about predominantly through his vehement support of the bipartisan Safer Communities Act,” he explained.
Thune emerged as the winner after a two-round vote. According to Kirk, Thune holds an impressive track record on Second Amendment issues, backed by an “A+” rating from the NRA.
Kirk emphasized that Thune “has not only an excellent voting record on all critical NRA issues but has also made a vigorous effort to promote and defend the Second Amendment.”
Kirk also noted the potential impact of this shift in leadership on pending legislation, particularly mentioning a proposal by Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky.
If passed, this law could create nationwide concealed carry reciprocity, a priority for Second Amendment supporters. Kirk put it simply: “Your driver’s license doesn’t just become invalid when you cross a state line; why should your concealed carry license?”
Summing up the significance of Thune’s election, Kirk noted, “We’ve won the White House back, we got the House, we got the Senate, we’ve selected a fantastic Senate majority leader in John Thune. It literally could not have gone any better for the Second Amendment today.”
As Kirk celebrated this “home run,” he hinted that future challenges might arise.
However, he remains optimistic about the momentum gained, highlighting the president-elect’s commitment to appointing strong supporters of the Second Amendment.
