MAHWAH, N.J. — Two police officers are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a man from a burning SUV following a crash involving a semitruck, FOX 5 reported.

Mahwah Police Officer Chris Lupo was first to arrive at the scene on Oct. 19, with Lt. Mike Blondin arriving moments later, according to the report. The semitruck was parked on the shoulder of I-287 when the SUV crashed into it.

Bodycam footage shows the officers pulling the unconscious driver from his SUV just before it became fully engulfed in flames.

Paramedics treated the man en route to a hospital, where he later recovered, according to the report.

“Every man and woman in this profession has the goal to save lives and make a community better,” Lupo told FOX5. “And I think it’s just a testament to what we all signed up to do. And I don’t think anyone would hesitate to do it again.”

The mayor of Mahwah praised the officers’ for their actions.

Members of our police department didn’t hesitate to take life-saving actions to rescue the driver of the car who had been trapped,” Mayor Jim Wysocki said in a statement. “The driver is recovering and is very thankful for the measures our officers took to save him.”
