The incident occurred on November 10, 2023, when officers were dispatched after receiving a report of a man firing shots and displaying erratic behavior, according to the report. Upon arrival, officers encountered the man, who was captured on security footage pointing a firearm out of his front door.

Body camera video released on Sept. 28 shows the officers instructing the man to drop his weapon and lay on the ground, he initially complied. Minutes later, officers instructed him to stand up and come toward them. He can be seen stumbling as he moves closer to the officers.

After approaching the officers and cruisers, the man suddenly turned around, ran back and dove to the ground, grabbing the handgun. As he rolled away, now holding the gun, an officer fired shots, striking him.

The footage captures officers providing medical aid to the man, including applying a tourniquet to his arm. He was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition, according to the report.

Hood was later charged with resisting law enforcement, unlawful possession of a firearm and criminal recklessness. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in August 2024.

The IMPD’s Use of Force Review Board determined the officer’s actions were in compliance with department policy, according to the report. No officers or civilians were injured during the incident.
