Layering clothing for winter activities is essential for staying warm and comfortable. Your clothing is the first line of shelter when you walk outside the house or brave the wilds. As the colder months approach, it is time to start thinking about your cool weather gear. Here are some things to consider.

Establishing the Proper Gear for Cool Weather

During the cooler months, temperatures tend to fluctuate—often fairly dramatically. For this reason, layering is an excellent strategy because it allows you to adjust for the given temperatures. A modular layering system typically includes the following layers:

  • Base Layer: Manages moisture using materials like polyester, nylon, merino wool, and silk.
  • Middle Layer: Provides insulation, with options like fleece and down.
  • Outer Layer: Protects from wind and rain with water and windproof jackets that are also breathable.

The nice thing about layering is that you can adjust the order of the middle and outer layers. So, if it is not too cold, you can go with the base and middle layers. However, if it is a little colder, windy, or rainy, you can go with the base and outer layers. Finally, layer up with all three when the temps drop into the much colder range.

Adding Scarves

Scarves and bandanas are incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways in survival situations. In fact, they have been recommended as essential items for outdoorsmen since the late 1800s.

Synthetic materials or wool are highly recommended when choosing the best material for a scarf. They provide ample shade and can serve various purposes, such as creating a makeshift arm sling or lashing a tripod. A warm scarf wrapped around the neck and over the face can trap body heat in cold weather.

The Tuff Possum Multipurpose Survival Scarf is an outstanding example of a versatile scarf. This essential piece of clothing goes beyond simply keeping your neck warm— it’s almost like the Swiss Army Knife of clothing! The soft, diamond rip-stop nylon used in its construction creates dead airspace that effectively prevents cold air from stealing body heat from your neck.

The Tuff Possum Multipurpose Survival Scarf is a versatile and essential piece of clothing.

The scarf’s design, with an open end in a long bag shape, enables it to be utilized for numerous other purposes. This includes gathering materials for a debris bed or fire-starting, collecting nuts, berries, and seeds, or even serving as a makeshift pillowcase when stuffed with clothes.

Additionally, the neon orange interior provides added versatility. It can be turned inside out to be used as a signal panel or worn during hunting season.

Moreover, the scarf can be used as a pre-filter before boiling water for consumption. However, it’s recommended to hand-wash it without soap before using it in this manner. Additionally, it can be laid on the ground to catch shavings for fire prep.

Despite being 17 inches wide by 58 inches long and weighing just under 7 ounces, it dries remarkably quickly and protects from UV rays due to its dark color.

The Benefits of a Bandana or Neck Gaiter for Cooler Weather

A bandana is a versatile accessory essential for outdoor activities. It can be used as a headband, sweat rag, washcloth, toilet paper, face shield, sun protector, signaler, bandage, pot holder, water catch, and stage one of water filtration. Due to its countless uses, a bandana is a true unsung camping and survival gear hero.

Cool Weather Gear: The author pairs Wazoo Gear Neck Gaiters with a thick, warm beanie for the extremely cold months in the Northeast.

I find that neck gaiters, like bandanas, work well and may have a slight advantage because they are tubular. These versatile accessories can replace a beanie and provide maximum facial, neck, and head coverage. In cold weather and for emergency signaling, I rely on Wazoo Gear neck gaiters.

Gloves

Leather gloves are an essential yet often overlooked piece of gear for outdoor activities and hard work. They provide protection and versatility in various environments. Whether you’re handling logs, starting a fire, or navigating rough terrain, leather gloves offer crucial hand protection. They also serve as effective oven mitts and can help block wind and snow.

Sturdy ironclad leather gloves are indispensable when performing woodworking tasks around the homestead or building a campfire.

Pairing them with light fleece gloves can provide added warmth in colder conditions. Additionally, leather gloves offer a good grip for navigating rocky or slippery surfaces and protect against thorny vegetation in diverse terrains. Leather gloves provide a more comfortable and secure outdoor experience by keeping your hands safe.
