The Sept. 18 incident began when officers encountered a domestic violence suspect who was resisting arrest and requested additional units for assistance. During the arrest, two officers were exposed to powder cocaine in the suspect’s possession, according to the report. They were transported to a hospital.

Two additional police units, responding to the call for backup from another part of town, were involved in a collision. All four officers in the two cruisers sustained head injuries, two of them severe, and one officer suffered a serious leg injury, according to the report. Albany Police Department Chief Eric Hawkins noted that none of the injuries are life-threatening.

Mayor Kathy Sheehan stated that all four officers have been able to communicate with medical staff.

The suspect resisting arrest has been charged with multiple offenses, including criminal possession of a controlled substance, obstruction of governmental administration and harassment.
