WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Following what the FBI described as an “apparent assassination attempt” on Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club, the Republican presidential nominee is expressing gratitude to law enforcement for their swift actions in preventing a potential second attempt on his life, ABC News reported.

The suspect was detained on Sept. 15 by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office shortly after the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office put out a BOLO, according to the report. He faces charges of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, according to federal prosecutors. Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.

The former president expressed gratitude on social media, thanking the U.S. Secret Service, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies for their efforts.

“Most importantly, I want to thank the U.S. Secret Service, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and his Office of brave and dedicated Patriots, and, all of Law Enforcement, for the incredible job done today at Trump International in keeping me, as the 45th President of the United States, and the Republican Nominee in the upcoming Presidential Election, SAFE,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities gather more details on the suspect. Trump is expected to meet with Secret Service officials following the incident for further briefings, according to the report.

“The job done was absolutely outstanding. I am very proud to be an American!” Trump said.

On Sept. 15, U.S. Secret Service agents stationed a few holes ahead of where Trump was playing spotted the muzzle of a rifle protruding from the shrubbery lining the course, approximately 400 yards away, the Associated Press reports.

The gunman dropped the rifle and fled in an SUV after an agent fired toward him. The suspect left the firearm behind along with two backpacks, a scope used for aiming and a GoPro camera, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.

The suspect had a calm, flat demeanor and showed little emotion when he was stopped and didn’t question why he was pulled over, Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said.
