Juneau, Alaska – On July 15, 2024, a tense encounter between police and a man armed with a knife in downtown Juneau ended in a fatal shooting.
A Juneau Police Department officer was patrolling the area when he spotted 35-year-old Steven Kissack, a person of interest in a recent assault case.
As the officer began questioning Kissack, he approached the officer with a knife.
The officer gave multiple verbal commands for Kissack to drop the weapon and called for emergency backup. Despite repeated orders from responding officers, Kissack refused to comply.
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, officers fired three 40mm less-lethal rounds at Kissack, which struck him.
However, Kissack continued his advance toward the officers, still wielding the knife. At this point, two officers discharged their firearms, striking Kissack.
Officers on the scene immediately began lifesaving measures, assisted by Capital City Fire/Rescue. Kissack was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
This incident is under investigation as authorities review body cam footage and other evidence from the scene.
