[SHOT 2023] Hands On with Ohio Ordnance Works’ 240 Patrol-SLR Conversion Kit By: Matthew Moss

The Ohio Ordnance Works SHOT Show 2023 booth had a range of their civilian semi-auto weapons out on display including the HCAR. Alongside the HBAR was the Ohio Ordnance Works manufactured M240 fitted with one of their 240 Patrol-SLR Conversion Kit. The kit is something they have offered to the military and law enforcement for a number of years but recently, in November of last year, they made the kit available commercially to the M240-owning public.

The 240 Patrol-SLR Conversion Kit is a must for any M240 owner looking to lighten the load. The 240 Patrol-SLR Conversion Kit offers a shorter, lightened barrel with a lightweight bipod and a new railed forend for accessory mounting. The barrel has been shortened down to about 14 inches and an M240 converted with the kit will weigh in at around 22.3 lbs. It definitely felt lighter than an M240 of an FN MAG when we picked it up.

The gun on display was itself a built-from-the-ground-up OOW240P (Patrol) which features all of the parts included in the kit.

Here’s what Ohio Ordnance Works has to say about the Patrol-SLR Conversion Kit:

The OOW 240P-SLR is a belt-fed, air cooled Rifle, capable of sustained and accurate fire while using a shorter and lighter barrel, M4 style collapsible stock, removable lightweight bipod and a foregrip due to the new bottom picatinny rail.

This conversion takes your standard “Bravo” configuration weighing in at 27.5 lbs. and an over all length of 49 inches. Bringing it down to 22.3 lbs. with an over all length of 41.25 inches.

MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny Rails on the top cover and at the 3,6, and 9 o’clock positions of the forend allow for the mounting of numerous accessories including laser devices, lights, night vision, thermal, day optics, and various foregrips and bipods.

The new shorter barrel features dimpling which reduces weight while increasing heat dissipation with no loss of strength or durability.
