The man was armed with knives, and police received several calls about him damaging cars and threatening people before the paramedics arrived.

As the two paramedics were tending to the patient in need, a neighbor took matters into his own hands and open-fired on the suspect.

A nearby neighbor, John Morea, told Fox5 Atlanta, “It was about four shots. Somebody outside popped him, and that was it.”

The knife-wielding suspect was identified as Darrion Suave Fraley. He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and was said to be in critical condition. The gunman was also injured during the incident but is not in critical condition.

The family of 34-year-old Fraley informed Fox5 Atlanta that he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and claimed he was suffering from an imbalance in medication during the Monday morning incident.

Fraley’s charges from the incident include the criminal attempt to commit murder, two counts of obstruction of an EMT, possession of a gun during the commission of a crime, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, and aggravated assault.

Elizabeth Rawlins of WTOC said she spoke to a woman, who did not want to be identified, who indicated the armed citizen responder is her stepson, a military veteran.

She said the incident took place at the end of her driveway, and her stepson reacted by grabbing his firearm from the house and going to defend the paramedics.

“It’s not what he planned to do this morning, but when someone comes at you, and it’s between you and them, his military training kicked in,” she told WGAU Radio.

So far, Gainesville Police say no charges have been filed against the armed citizen at this time.
