Last year Taurus released the GX4, a 9mm micro-compact that in one brilliant package completely re-wrote the definition of Taurus firearm design and execution. Simply stated: they killed it. Now fresh out of a return trip to the lab, the Taurus GX4XL expands on the GX4, increasing performance in an everyday carry package.
Taurus GX4XL Details
The GX4XL retains many features found on the original. The new pistol still comprises the same hybrid stainless steel and polymer receiver. It includes a modular grip with standard or high-swell backstrap options. Grip texturing, a reversible magazine release and a flat-face trigger all come from the GX4. So what did Taurus change?
The GX4XL adds a new slide and barrel configuration to increase accuracy and terminal performance. Taurus increased the barrel and slide to get more out your 9mm in a micro-compact design. The extended barrel and slide assembly increases the barrel length by .64 inches. The longer barrel delivers an increase in muzzle velocity, so it hits harder downrange. The longer slide also delivers a greater sight radius, helping shooters attain more accurate fire. But the GX4XL still retains much of the micro-compact carry features that make it an EDC winner.
The carbon steel slide features a gas nitride finish to enhance surface hardness and reduce wear, according to Taurus. Meanwhile, the DLC-coated barrel should hold up exceedingly well and promote smooth operation. A serrated blackout steel drift-adjustable rear sight and fixed white dot front sight come standard. The rear sight dovetail cut and front sight mounting hole maintain compatibility with many aftermarket sight systems, according to Taurus.
But carry-optics remain the hot trend. So the GX4XL also comes in a version including the T.O.R.O (Taurus Optics Ready Option) slide. It comes with a direct-thread mounting system to accept most common micro red dots.
