If you ever find yourself needing to use your firearm in self-defense, the last thing you want to worry about is dealing with the potential lawsuits afterward…

Because, surprise…that fancy umbrella policy you have on your home (probably) doesn’t cover the use of firearms.

That’s where CCW insurance comes in!

Okay, so technically it’s self-defense protection, rather than “CCW insurance.”

Whatever you call it, companies like USCCA and CCW Safe, among others, offer insurance to individuals to help cover the costs that arise from using your firearm in self-defense.

But who should you choose for your insurance?

Today, we’re taking a look at Right to Bear to see what they offer, and how they compare to the competition. By the end of this article, you’ll know whether this protection is right for you.

Disclaimer: I’m not an insurance agent and you should double-check everything in your policy since things get updated.

What’s Included in a Right to Bear Policy?

Update August 2022: Right to Bear updated its policies so there’s only one tier that has unlimited legal defense for both criminal and civil defense.

Practically speaking, what the coverage actually does is help pay for your trial defense if you are sued in civil or criminal court (or both!).

If you are found guilty in civil court, then the policy would cover all attorney costs you would have to pay during that trial.

If you’re found guilty in a criminal case for your self-defense incident, Right to Bear would not try to recoup costs from you. This is a big difference from some other providers who will claw back fees.

It’s also important to keep in mind that for most types of coverage, Right to Bear provides the cost up front, rather than reimbursement.

This is a big deal to some people since these costs can add up quickly. It’s definitely something to keep in mind when shopping for insurance.

In addition to the boring legal stuff, Right to Bear also offers a 24/7 hotline, as well as training videos and webinars on self-defense tactics.

Although we’re a gun-centric blog…it’s great to note that Right to Bear covers all legal weapons.

Right to Bear Insurance Plans & Add-Ons

The biggest deciding factor for most people in choosing which insurance to get is the price. Right to Bear had a tiered system before that made you choose the amount of protection.

But now it’s one price for unlimited coverage. Current rates are $11/month.

Like most insurance providers, they also offer one-time annual fees of $125 that saves you $7 compared to the monthly price.

Use code PEWPEW15 to get it down to $106 for a full year.

Out of those other benefits I’m really digging psychological support and expert witness coverage. And not listed there but is on the site under “Education” is Gun Replacement…they will replace your gun if it is taken after a self-defense incident.

In addition to the monthly fee, you can also choose to tack on additional benefits:

  • Additional Associate Coverage: $105/Year
  • Multi-State Coverage: $35/Year
  • Bail Bond Coverage: (Up to $100,000): $35/Year
  • Minor Household Children: $35/Year

Out of all those I opted for Multi-State Coverage since I travel a decent amount. Bail Bond Coverage is also so I can get home and spend time with family while the courts deal with everything. And finally Additional Associate Coverage for my wife since we have a home-defense plan where she is also armed.

Right to Bear vs. Other Companies

With lots of other companies providing similar self-liability insurance or self-defense protection, deciding on which one to go with for your insurance comes down to what you’re looking for.

Without getting into too much detail comparing Right to Bear with the other guys (check out our comparison article to get a better idea), they have an edge by offering unlimited coverage for both civil and criminal liability.

And no recouping of fees if you’re found criminally guilty.

Whatever your needs and wants, just make sure you are making an apples-to-apples comparison. That ensures that you can get the best bang for your buck and still meet all your insurance needs.

Final Verdict

At the end of the day, it’s better to have any policy than none at all.

And if money’s tight, $11 with no add-ons with Right to Bear would be better than continuing to stuff your money under the mattress.

And of course remember to use code PEWPEW15 for 15% off.
