Polymer80 Changes Product Line To Comply With BATFE Rule By: David Lane

As of August 11, 2022, BATFE rule 2021R-05F, Definition of “Frame or Receiver” and Identification of Firearms, went into effect.

According to the BATFE and the Department of Justice, the amended federal regulations are meant to:

  • Remove and replace regulatory definitions of “firearm frame or receiver.”

and “frame or receiver” because the current regulations fail to capture the

full meaning of those terms.

  • Clarify the meaning of “firearm” and “gunsmith.”
  • Provide definitions of terms such as “complete weapon,” “complete muffler

or silencer device,” “multi-piece frame or receiver,” “privately made

firearm,” and “readily” for purposes of clarity given advancements in

firearms technology.

  • The Department also amended ATF’s regulations on marking and recordkeeping

that are necessary to implement these definitions.

In Polymer80’s case, these rules change what they are and are not allowed to sell as far as unserialized pistol kits.

According to Polymer80, “Polymer80 wholeheartedly disagrees with the ATF final rule. However, in an effort to maintain a legal business, will comply with the unconstitutional regulations.”

“In accordance with the new ATF final rule, Polymer80 will no longer offer their popular 80% kits in the same configuration in which customers have grown accustom.”

In compliance with the rule, Polymer80 has launched three new options for customers looking to build legal firearms.

OPTION 1 is an unserialized 80% frame with rear rail, locking block rail system and pins. No jig or tools are included with this product.

OPTION 2 is a serialized frame that does include a jig, tooling, rear rail and locking block rail system. This option is the same as the prior 80% kit offered by Polyer80, but with a serialized frame.

OPTION 3 is the “Build Back Better” kit, which includes everything listed in option 2 plus a slide assembly. This kit contains everything you need to build a complete, serialized firearm.

It should be noted that option 1 is not available in all states due to state law against “ghost guns.”

Polymer80 has also stated that they are committed to continuing development and will continue to offer their line of complete pistols, such as the PFC9 and PFS9.
