CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. — A Narcan vending machine at a Charleston County, South Carolina, detention center – the first of its kind in the state – is turning heads.
The vending machine, WCBD News 2 reported, holds 54 boxes and is stocked by the detention center. It’s available to individuals who have been released and they are allowed to take as many packages of Narcan as they want. However, those in the drug and alcohol program must go through training by counselors on how to use Narcan correctly before leaving, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
“We are doing all we can to make sure that people who leave our facility are well-equipped to re-enter society,” said Sheriff Kristin Graziano. “Providing free Narcan helps us with our mission of ‘Service Beyond the Call.’ If the Narcan saves just one life, it’ll be well worth it. I’m thankful to the Charleston Center for working with us on this initiative.”
