Hornady Rechargeable Gun Safe Dehumidifier Review
This dehumidifier is great for keeping your gun safe dry and free of moisture. As the name indicates, it’s rechargeable, but the word rechargeable isn’t inline with what you think it is – it’s not a battery powered device so you’re not recharging batteries, I feel that a more accurate representation to the term rechargeable is that it ‘resets’ the silica gel crystals. So you don’t have to worry about batteries, and it’s small enough to fit in most gun safes.
Installation is super simple, you’ll need a screw driver – ideally a battery drill which you’ll use to install the bracket onto the wall of your safe, and the Hornady dehumidifier will just clip onto that bracket – and that’s it, you’re done!
In my case, the silica gel crystals start off as a blue hue, and as they absorb moisture they’ll change to a lighter blue/purple color. This color change indicates the beads have, absorbed the moisture and done their job and are ready to be recharged, ‘reset’. If you’re in an environment that is know for higher humidity and you’re in and out of your safe a lot, you’ll probably need to reset the crystals in a few weeks. I have a friend who doesn’t access his safe a lot, and he can leave it for around 90 days before needing to recharge the crystals.
When the indicator shows that the silica gel crystals have absorbed the amount of moisture that they can handle, it’s time to remove the dehumidifier from the bracket – which is a simple 90degree turn – and plug it into an electrical outlet to reset and dry out the crystals ready to start the process again. On the back of the device there is a built in power socket plug which you just move 90 degrees into position and plug it into the wall socket.
Compared to something like the Golden Rod Dehumidifier or the Lockdown Dehumidifier Rod which doesn’t require any maintenance, there is a little more to consider in this process. You don’t want to ‘set and forget it’ with the Hornady gun safe dehumidifier. If you don’t have access to a power outlet in your safe or you don’t want to drill a hole to run a power cable inside the cabinet, this is a great resettable solution to help with humidity levels that can introduce rust and damage your firearms.
So to recap, for a simple and easy solution for a gun safe dehumidifier I would highly recommend the Hornady Rechargeable Gun Safe Dehumidifier as a great silica based solution for anyone who wants to keep their guns in top condition and doesn’t have an electrical outlet access in their safe.
